SRMMUN 2019

Be A Part Of The Legacy

22-24 February

Message From The Secretary General

To the members of the SRMMUN community,

On behalf of the entire organising committee, it is my pleasure to announce that the eighth edition of SRM Model United Nations will be held on 22, 23 and 24 February, 2019.

A Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations in which participants assume the role of diplomats from different countries and deliberate over international issues. While the direct lessons from MUNs are manifold, the indirect benefits are the ones that stay with you for a lifetime. The ability to dissect and analyse seemingly complex concepts, to acknowledge and understand the multifaceted nature of problems, and most importantly, to actively listen to friends and foes alike, is what shelves MUNs in the “invaluable” section of the library that is life.

Since its inception, SRMMUN has grown exponentially. Today, while we take great pride in the fact that we are one of the premier conferences in the country, we are also aware of the responsibility we carry with that position. Our focus has always been on propagating the benefits of this academic activity and in the process, trying to effect personal growth in all the lives that we touch. This year, we’ve got one of the most diverse set of committees in store for you. They cover various domains such as women’s rights, nuclear energy, economics, science and technology, international sanctions, criminal justice, and many more. This diversity ensures that everyone receives the opportunity to delve into their interests at a deeper level through this platform. I hope you all make the most of this experience.

One of the things most associated with SRMMUN is our tagline, “Be a Part of the Legacy”. What is this Legacy and why should you be a part of it? The Legacy is the footprint of the visionaries who have given their blood, sweat, and tears to build this conference from the ground up. It is the sense of fraternity that we’ve built through our inclusive approach to success. It is the promise that the bonds you make and the knowledge you gain will stay with you for a lifetime, irrespective of what capacity you participate in.

My association with this conference began when I was a fresher in college. I was a delegate in the Security Council as well as a member of the Delegate Affairs Team. The opportunity of experiencing SRMMUN from both ends of the table has definitely been transformative. Through this edition, my team and I hope to repay our debt to this conference by sharing with you, all that we have received and much more. With an all-star Organising Team, an alluring campus, and the perfect set of committees, your gracious presence is all we seek.

About Us

“More than ever before in human history, we share a common destiny. We can master it only if we face it together. And that, my friends, is why we have the United Nations.”
-Kofi Annan

SRM Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations, but with a difference. It is a place where opinions are heard and the ink flows; a conference where the mind is unshackled, no tethers, and no ropes. At SRMMUN, ideas are mooted and deliberated upon judiciously. Our motto "Be A Part of The Legacy", symbolises our commitment. The doors of the Legacy are open to all, to anyone who is willing to bring about a change. It is not simply about what is left behind, but about what you leave behind. It is an ethos, which serves as the mind palace to your rationale and a place where you can forge your identity. And thus, we believe in preserving the Legacy.

What is an MUN?

A Model United Nations Conference is a form of structured and consequential debate that draws on facets such as public speaking, research and critical analysis. The fundamental difference between a debate and an MUN lies in the latter’s directional discussion. What an MUN aspires for is deliberation on matters that are not only debated on a global scale, but also resolved among diplomats and experts. By understanding the power withheld by an organisation such as the United Nations, MUNs hone the young minds to be leaders of tomorrow. Conferences such as these inspire the participants to think out of the box and implement solutions. The matters discussed thereby ensure a holistic approach towards the problem and enables one to observe the same from varied aspects. Essentially, what an MUN imparts is direction to applied knowledge.
Today, we have established ourselves by engraving our presence in the Indian MUN circuit. But what makes our impact a legacy?

SRMMUN and the Legacy

So far, history speaks in our favour. With a commendable past record, we assure you unparalleled quality. The Executive Board (EB) members symbolise knowledge backed by exemplary experience. Statistically speaking, the cumulative experience of the EB members has exceeded the combined experience of all delegates in each of our editions. Furthermore, our collaborations have left a social impact prominent across the circuit. Our previous collaborations are splendid examples of our motives, efforts and intentions. These include UN Information Centre for Bhutan and India, UN Women’s Campaign of HeForShe, and Teach For India. Promoting the cause of such campaigns and social organizations provides us with intricate perspectives towards policy making and deliberation. We have left no stone unturned in terms of our hospitality by ensuring stellar accommodation and food from reputed caterers; we have had Kalyan Hometel as our Hospitality Partner and Paradise Biryani as our Food Partner.
Eminent personalities have graced us with their presence in the previous editions. We have had Mr. Kingshuk Nag, a resident editor with Times of India, Mr. Krishna Prasad, the Former Editor-in-Chief of the Outlook Magazine; they have been pioneers in their respective fields. What we have preserved, is our legacy; unwavering and distinguished.

Our Vision

We strive to improve our existing standards by challenging ourselves to reach heights never scaled before. Increasing awareness about global issues, and inculcating an organic approach towards them are of utmost importance. But what sets the Legacy apart is the experience that the delegates gain throughout the conference. Hours of deliberation aided with diplomacy enhances an individual’s prowess.
Backed by history and inspired by excellence, SRMMUN’s Legacy strives to establish itself as the pinnacle of success.
3 days, 15 committees, 1000+ delegates. Come. See. Conquer.
